Residents seek separate bins for electronic waste dump

Residents of Rajinder Nagar seek separate bins for electronic wastes as recently mercury was found in one of the dustbins which is very dangerous. "The Mayapuri incident has been really shocking for all of us and we want the government to take initiative this time. The citizens should be made aware about this properly," said DM Narang, general secretary, R block, New Rajinder Nagar residents' welfare association. "Mercury was lying open from a broken thermometer in a dustbin. So we called some people from the civic authority to clean up the waste and they did it but this can really pose a serious threat in future, so we request the government to take steps to reduce this problem," said Ashmita Thakur, a resident of Pusa Road. According to the residents, these bins will help in putting the electronic wastes separately and also reduce the threat. "The mixing of normal garbage with electrical waste can lead to serious results such as radiation this way," added Narang. Few residents who live near Mandir Marg and Ganga Ram road have seen broken tubelights and bulbs dumped in the open and fear that it might just cause some health hazard. "If the government seriously wants to do something then we can also help and take steps along with them but something should be seriously done about it," said Trishna Sehgal, a resident. Residents demand these separate bins in whole of the city and not just Rajinder Nagar. |
