Park turns free-for-all in Sector 8
Buffaloes, leftovers from parties, anti-social elements, a temple, filth and squalor — this 1.5-acre park in Sector 8 has everything of all these, except greenery and proper facilities befitting a park.
Only one portion of the park is open to the public and the other one is being encroached upon by nearby villagers who tie their buffaloes and keep piles of cow dung. They have also constructed a temple at that place.
The Residents Welfare Association of the sector has been complaining to MCF commissioner, joint commissioner, chief engineer and horticulture executive engineer since 2006 but to no avail.
Worse still, the portion of the park available for the residents does not have any facilities. BK Mittal, a resident of the sector said, "Even if the MCF is not constructing the other portion of the park it should at least provide us with the facilities. The most important thing is that there should be a proper lighting system. At night the whole place gets pitch dark and all kinds of wrong activities take place in the place. Many a time, men come and get drunk and also at times couples keep on sitting in the park at night. It has also become haven for criminals. At least a streetlight should be installed on a priority basis."
The residents are also fed up with the foul smell that emanates during rain. Umesh Sharma, another resident of the sector said, "It has become difficult to live in this area. But we do not have any other option. As the villagers keep piles of cow dung at the portion of land that was supposed to be a park, there is stink all over and even our house is not spared. During rain, cow dung flows into our compound with water."
Deepak Raut, another resident of the sector said, "There is nothing in this park. No benches to sit, no swings for kids, no light, no pruning of either grass or trees. One cannot even sit on the grass, as dogs roam about in the park and shit there. Once this park is properly developed, no such activities will continue here."
Some alleged people from the village organise parties and marriages in this park without permission either from HUDA or MCF and dirty the place. "All the leftovers keep on lying in the park with no one to clean it. When the tandoors are lit, the grass below gets burnt and does not grow again," said Mrunali Raut, a resident of the sector.
