A shopping superhighway taking shape in 46th Cross
Over the coming years, don't be surprised if 46th Cross of Jayanagar turns out to be another shopping highway like the 100ft Road in Indiranagar. The wide and lengthy road lined with shady trees is fast going commercial, with residences getting converted into shopping malls.
Tamil Nadu-based Nalli Silks is the latest brand to join this group. Much before it came, there were its rivals Deepam Silks, Angadi Silks, Neeru's Silks… the list goes on. Today, from textile showrooms to gold jewellers, and supermarkets to swanky shopping malls -- you name it and you have it here.
Recently, Central Mall has branched out to this area, and with it came the mini Manipal Hospital. Leading retail brand Big Bazaar has long set up a mall here. In front of the Bazaar is the popular hangout called Woody's.
This road is also home to numerous automobile showrooms and there are the ATMs of almost all banks here. "Here there are about 15 money vending machines (ATMs)," says Subramanya, whose house is just a crossroad away from this road.
Here is a huge showroom of Krishiniah Chetty Jewellers. So big is the showroom that it covers almost the entire commercial complex. Each such showroom spends lakhs of rupees in monthly rent.
Not all of them are making money. A stone throw from this jewellery shop, a wine shop has recently closed shutters. Local residents say the shop went out of business after making huge loss over the past several years.
As commerce invades the neighbourhood, property prices are going sky high. Recently, a property owner rented out his vacant residential plot on a monthly rent of Rs. 25,000.
Until a few years ago, the only known shopping centre was 4th Block BDA Complex. And this road (46th Cross), stretched between Banashankari bus terminal to Jayadeva Cardiology Hospital, was looking deserted. The only known shopping centre was 4th Block BDA Complex. With the ongoing construction of Metro railway line promising to give easy access to the area, brand owners are vying among themselves to set up shop here.
