Mesmerised by those exotic belly dance moves? It may just be time for you to take up the dance form. Belly dancing is one of the most popular fitness trends to have come out in recent years. Many women are trying this fun and effective technique to tone their bodies. It's a wonderful art form and offers a great form of exercise. Hip drops, sways and shimmies are some of the celebrated moves from the world of belly dancing. But if you thought it is just the belly that's in focus, think again. The sensual moves in belly dancing are not just restricted to belly but benefit other body parts too. This highly popular Middle-Eastern dance form is a complete body workout for it exercises not just the waist but also the legs, abs, knees, hips, pelvic muscles and thighs. Its popularity is ever increasing and many fitness centres are now offering belly dance lessons for fitness and weight loss. Improved posture and muscle toning "Our spine consists of bones and ligaments. There are 33 vertebrae joined together by cartilage and ligaments and almost every function of the torso depends on their flexibility and movement. Belly dancing tones these muscles and ligaments making it more flexible. These toned muscles improve posture and prevent back pain. Arms and shoulders get exercised during lifts, circles, ripples motions of snake arms etc. The graceful hip drops, rolls, and pivots in this dance form utilise muscle groups in the abdomen, pelvis, trunk, spine, and neck; benefiting entire body," says Vikki Verma, belly dancer cum Latin and Freestyle dancer. "I have been learning belly dance for the past one year. The experience is very good and now it has become a part of my life. We are taught snakelike movements of the abdomen, miniature waves, slightly lifting the chest and falling down to the pelvis. No big movements; just a controlled flow, caressing each ascent and descent, almost teasing. We perform according to the beats of the music. In the beginning it seems difficult but later it becomes fun," shares Tanisha, a belly dance student. Stress reduction Belly dance helps in reducing stress. When we experience stress our body gets tensed. The moves and postures in belly dance relax those vulnerable muscles in the neck, shoulders and back, making body light. "Belly dance calms your mind, body and soul altogether. It is suitable for all ages and teaches a series of basic steps and body movements which means that no previous dancing experience is required," adds Vikki Verma, belly dancer cum Latin and Freestyle dancer. Also, the risk of injury is minimal when movements are done correctly. — Vani Vyas |
