Painting contest for kids a big draw
 |
Even as the skies were dark and the threat of a downpour was looming large, hundreds of children thronged the Chamundeshwari Park in Koramangala 8th Block on Sunday to take part in on-the-spot painting competition. More than 250 students in the age group of 5 to 15 years participated in this competition, organised by Koramangala 8th Block Welfare Association to mark their association's 23rd anniversary. Adugodi Traffic Police Inspector Susheela, who inaugurated the competition by lighting the lamp, distributed the drawing sheets to the enthusiastic children on that chilly morning. The topic was on 'Road Safety'. Once the drawing sheets reached them, the children were deeply immersed and gave vent to their vivid imagination. Armed with colour kits and applying their creative minds, the children brought out various facets of road safety within minutes. Soon one could see just-painted pictures all along the park pathway with paint stained palms, spilt water and mess. Meanwhile, MLA and former minister Ramalinga Reddy too visited the park and saw the art works of the children. Later he inaugurated the issue of senior citizens' ID cards. Speaking on the occasion, the MLA lauded the efforts of the association for conducting such competitions successively for the past few years. The contest theme was on road safety, conducted in three categories for the age group of 5 to 9 years; 10 to 12 years and 13 to 15 years. Soon after the competition was over the children were given a pack of biscuits to each one of them. Traffic Wardens from the locality assisted and finally judged the winning art pieces of all the categories. Three prizes were given away under each category. As the results were announced one by one, the children who were eagerly waiting, cheerfully applauded the winners. Each winner emerged from the group to collect the certificate and a gift - a beautiful model of globe from the guests namely Adugodi Traffic Police Inspector Susheela, Corporators Murugesh Mudaliar and Kokila Radhakrishna, association president L Nagaraj. Students from various schools in and around 8th block such as Parikrama School, Lawrence School and Government Primary School took part. Before handing over the prizes, Traffic Police Inspector Susheela gave some advice and safety tips to the children. She advised them to walk in the opposite direction of the traffic flow on the streets to avoid being knocked down by a vehicle from behind. She told them that some children, while riding the pillion, prefer to sit in the opposite direction of the movement of the vehicle, which is dangerous. The winners in 5 to 9 years category are Sathish Kumar of Parikrma School (first prize), Sai Kiran of Lawrence School (second prize) and Nireeksha of Mary Immaculate School (third prize). In 10 to 12 years category, the winners are Kanmani from Lawrence School (first prize), G Vijay of Parikrma School (second prize) and Chaithra of A S of Lawrence School (third prize). In 13 to 15 years category, the winners are Rajesh T of Parikrma School (first prize). Last year too he had won the first prize in 10-12 years category, Santhosh P of Parikrma School (second prize) and R Rohit of Chinmaya School (third prize). Earlier, association secretary Govindarajan welcomed the gathering, while Sridhar proposed a vote of thanks. —Cityplus Newsdesk |
