Auto-rickshaws play truant; passengers wait at stands gets longer

Noida Authority (NA) has opened many temporary auto-rickshaw stands at various places in the city for the benefit of commuters, but these stands are proving to be useless as auto-rickshaw drivers have been missing from the stands. They don't wait at the stands for the passengers and instead roam or wait at some other places. According to auto-rickshaw drivers, these places are not prominent and very less number of potential customers come to these areas but passengers can be seen near auto stands waiting for the auto-rickshaws.
To remove the autos from the corners of the main roads, Noida Authority had developed more than a dozen temporary auto stands in many areas of the city so that the residents can easily get autos as Noida has limited modes of transport, but these stands are not being used properly.
Ramya Banerjee, a commuter said, "My home is located in Ghaziabad, while my office is at Sector 18, Noida. Noida Authority has recently developed one auto stand near Atta Chowk. I thought that now I will be able to hire an auto-rickshaw easily but I never see any auto-rickshaw at the stand."
58-year-old MP Mittal, a resident said, "It is very difficult for senior citizens to get auto-rickshaws and buses in Noida as they are very less in number than required. We have sent many requests to the concerned authorities to increase the number of buses and auto-rickshaws in the city, but they have done nothing till now."
Lalji Chaudhary, a regional transport officer (RTO) said, "Noida Authority has developed these stands after discussions with transport department. We will look into this matter soon. We will impose fines on the auto-rickshaw drivers who use the corners of roads to park their autos for getting more passengers."
District Administration (DA) of Gautam Budh Nagar has made a plan to increase the number of buses and auto-rickshaws in Noida as Commonwealth Games are round the corner. DA has called a meeting with officials of transport department in this regard. However, the date of meeting has not been decided as yet. |
