Students' rally to save environment Students of SD Adarsh Vidyalaya, Sector 47 Gurgaon organised a mass rally for the cause of environmental conservation. Around 200 school children joined the rally and tried to make people aware about the depletion of ozone layer, indiscriminate cutting of trees and lowering of ground water level. Asha Sharma, general secretary of Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee flagged off the rally from John Hall. The students walked with banners spreading the messages pertaining to spreading greenery, save earth, clean city green city, reuse reduce recycle renew, etc. Asha Sharma exhorted the children to save the environment by planting more and more trees and also emphasized on the need for rain water harvesting. The rally was supported by Savita Vashisht, district president, Mahila Congress (Rural), Raj Sanga, principal SDAV, Nancy Sharma, headmistress SDAV along with the other staff members.
Vidya School inaugurated Vidya, an organisation working on an integrated programme of education and empowerment for less-privileged children, youth and women celebrated its Founder's Day by inaugurating their school on the day. Sheila Dikshit, Chief Minister of Delhi was the chief guest for the evening. Vidya works in the urban slums of Delhi, Mumbai, Haryana and Goa. The school has been set up in Gurgaon's DLF phase III on a five-acre campus and has 1,000 students on its rolls. Students of Vidya School presented cultural programmes. It was followed by a Kathak performance by students of the school. Ms Dikshit inspired parents of the children to continue with their dreams for their children. "Every child has the caliber to become whatever he/she wants. Just because the child was not born in a family that can pay public school fees, does not mean that the child's dreams cannot come true," she said. Women of skill training programme, Udyog Kendra and micro-enterprise programmes displayed their wares and were highly appreciated. The children's science and ecology projects were highly appreciated by the Delhi CM.
Model UN conference held in DAV School Exalting the quintessential ideas of peace and harmony of the UN, the MUN 2009 (Model United Nations) Conference was held at DAV Public School, Gurgaon. Students from 80 schools all over the country participated in the conference and represented 109 countries. The three-day Model United Nations Conference (MUN) exposed students to a simulated functioning of UN Assembly and its constituent wings. It was an effort to familiarize students with the workings of UN and its different councils and committees--the Security Council, Human Rights Council, General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council and the International Court of Justice. It imbibed the spirit of universal brotherhood, besides providing them a platform to discuss the much relevant global issues by a virtual experience of actual proceedings of the United Nations. Profile of Egypt was presented by CCA School students comprising reports on its history, economy, foreign policy, heritage, political status, geographical features and productivity. The country profile and model were highly appreciated by the team of judges and finally was amongst the top ten to receive the prestigious Best Country Profile Trophy. The event was initiated with an 'Invocation' to the Five Elements of Creation. The little angels from the Kindergarten scintillated in rhythm to the 'Future of their Dreams'. The event was honoured by the gracious presence of Padmashree GP Chopra, president of DAV College Managing Committee, New Delhi. ''The DAVMUN is a noble attempt to foster understanding amongst our youth about the significance of international cooperation and the relevance of UN in illuminating issues concerning the world today, i.e the climate change, deforestation, terrorism and population," said GP Chopra.
'Run for diabetes' organised A 'Run for diabetes' was organised on the occasion of World Diabetes Day. Amitabh Biswas, a diabetologist organised the run to spread awareness on diabetes which is spreading rapidly in India. It was inaugurated by Rao Dharampal, MLA Badshapur and graced by Rajendra Kataria, deputy commissioner, Gurgaon. Rao Dharampal and RK Kataria ran a two kilometre stretch with scores of people. Rao Dharampal briefed the media about the necessity of exercise and physical fitness in diabetes management. Around 100 people participated in the run that started at Leisure Valley in Sector 29. The DC emphasized that every one should take up a physical activity to keep diabetes at bay.
Tales Travel' at Maurya School 'Tales Travel' an evening of story-telling was organised for children at Maurya School in Gurgaon by I-Entertainment with Culture Ireland. The performers won over the kids' hearts with interesting stories from far off lands like Ireland and China. Joe Brennan, a famous story teller from Ireland performed a story called 'How did rabbit get his tail' which traces the story of how initially the rabbit had a big bushy tail and how it became small the way it is today. Joe took the kids to a fairy land with an Irish fairy tale 'Wee Folk'. Imran Khan and Surangana Chatterjee performed a story about how the Chinese New Year and the 12 animals of the Chinese New Year came into being. The children were mesmerized by the various animals in the story and watched the performance with utmost focus and enjoyed it. Joe performed in various schools and conducted workshops for teachers on how story-telling can be made interesting. |
