Royal game snooker turns into a gambling sport
Please do not click my picture, I have not told my parents that I have come to play pool," said a Class XII student. But why doesn't he want his parents to know he is playing snooker when it is considered to be one of the most played royal games? The answer is gambling.
Despite the fact that parents do not like their children playing pool or snooker, the game is gaining popularity among the youth these days. With a lot of centres coming up, the city children are automatically drawn towards it.
Rajender Sharma, who takes care of the Family Pool at Sector 15 market, said, "Ours is a family pool so there is no smoking and no drinking. The environment is absolutely clean and a lot of youngsters come to play pool. Not just the boys, a lot of girls also come to play the game. There has been a growth in the number of youngsters coming to play the game for the last three to five years. Some children even lie at home and come here. The reason is the money. Initially they tell at home but later when they get addicted to the sport and they lie at home. They have to pay fees to play here."
Abhishek Majumdar, Class XII student and a regular player, said, "I have been playing pool for the last three years and even got a second runner-up prize at the DCA club. It is a beautiful game and if one plays it honestly then one can do wonders. Well these days I am playing this game just for fun."
Puneet Valecha, a pool and snooker player said, "These days, betting in every sport is very normal. In pool, people do bet ball wise and point wise and in snooker people bet frame wise and point wise. I have seen people who bet Rs 5,000 on one single ball and then losing it."
"Snooker is a very royal game and is one of the most difficult indoor games. A lot of concentration is required but in India people do not take it as a profession. It has turned into a gambling sport as a lot of money is bet on it. People smoke, play and bet. This is the scenario these days. Also, a lot of youngsters are coming to play the game. Every other day I find some new kids. Children as young as 13 years come to play pool. Initially they come for fun but gradually they start gambling too," Valecha said.
Ginish Chopra who has just started playing pool said, "I really like this game and go to play it for fun. I just take it as learning something new."
As the craze for snooker and pool is accelerating, the city is getting flooded with pool centres.
